SOLASTA: Crown of the Magister Preview for Steam Early Access

Greetings Gamers, Greg Vander Velde here to talk about Solasta: Crown of the Magister, an upcoming tactical turn-based RPG. Solasta seems like it might be the answer to so many who have always wanted a true Dungeons and Dragons like video game. The modest team at Tactical Adventures has harnessed the power of the 5th edition rule set and put it to work in the  Dungeon Master’s dream of a campaign. Allowing players to customize all four party members from the beginning of the game, start with premade characters, or have a mix of both to kick off this adventure sooner while preserving the enjoyable D&D like feel.

Starting the game off with customizing your party makes it really feel like a campaign at home, so put in the effort of creating the personalized characters. Tactical Adventures allows players to choose the character’s race, alignment, skills, a personality from a few different voice performances, and stats that you can either roll out or optimize for the character type. This all leads to a very personal feeling campaign experience with the addition of graphics and animations. The various personalities play a big role while playing the game too. Instead of having one character who can have a variety of dialog options each option reflects the character’s unique personality. Not every character can experience insults or decorum in the same way so it makes sense and gives life to the characters to allow them different types of responses.

Ultimate Dungeon Master

As someone who plays D&D on a weekly basis with his friends, I like to think of this game as the ultimate DM’s creation. The creatures at Tactical Adventures have said professed their love for the genre and it’s clear in the game. Save your imagination for IRL games and play this fully realized world, still bound to the rules but all the work has been done for you. This is like the next level version of playing on role20 or D&D Beyond. Both give great tools to tabletop players and allows for easy online sessions these days, but Solasta gives you a full package experience. I would love to see this game succeed in a big way! Leading to future installments, and maybe even a multiplayer mode where people can use this to play campaigns together. Putting all my future talk on hold though since this current early release version is only about 30% of the full game, so they still have a lot to do on this game before even thinking about expanding into the future. The good thing is that the team at Tactical Adventures listens to the fans so if you are going to adopt the game early it will give you the chance of providing helpful input into the game’s future.

The Dynamic game systems in place in Solasta are really quite something. You may be familiar with 2D RPGs but this is actually a 3D RPG and allows for a whole host of unique functions in the game. Verticality allows for traversing and exploring as well as complicating combat. The vertical 3D environment is interactive too, so if that group of enemies seems too challenging you may just be able to collapse the bridge they are on or knock a pillar down on them to finish the fight quickly. Another huge and impressive key feature of this game is the dynamic lighting that not only sets the mood but can play a role in combat, exploring, and even alert enemies to your party’s presents. The last big key feature of the game that sets it apart from the rest is something we have already talked about the party itself. Players have the ability to make such a powerful and complementary team to face any challenge as a team rather than controlling a single viewpoint character. In the tutorial stages of the early game, you get to understand what makes each character different and what their strong suits are in the game. This not only explains the game, but it also gives a brief back story for each character.

Beyond my extreme excitement for the rest of the game, I hope I have passed on the love for this small team trying to push to make something truly special. Please think about supporting this game in Early Access as it will help make the game even better in the future.
