If you’ve ever dreamed about being a spellcaster, this is the game you’ve been looking for. SpellPunk VR, by developer/publisher Incineration Productions, sets you in a world of exploding colors and mystical environments as you become a wizard capable of a variety of spells. Cast your chosen spell by drawing its corresponding shape in the air and blasting it towards your opponent. Each shape has its own damage and speed, but also make sure to take into account casting time.
As I said earlier, this game is really something I’ve been wanting to see in VR for a long time and I’m glad someone found a way to do it. The actions make me feel powerful. I can shoot fire from my fingertips just by drawing a triangle with my hand. The shape detection worked reliably for some shapes, notably the ones where lines didn’t have to cross, but less so for others. I wouldn’t mind an occasional mismatch if the game would just default to the closest spell, but right now, the shape just fizzles away as if you hadn’t tried casting anything. It’s pretty frustrating trying to draw something and no spell coming out. For this reason, I stuck to simple shapes I could do quickly and reliably. The more complex shapes were just not worth my time and effort since they would more than likely fail to be recognized. That’s not to say it wasn’t fun, but I wish I was encouraged somehow to switch things up. I got into a groove of keeping a shield on my left hand and alternating between two quick and easy attack spells on my right. I would like to eventually see some reason for me to go out of my comfort zone in this respect.
A major sticking point for me right now is the lack of single player mode. The game is designed for multiplayer and currently has only a training mode for people who wish to play alone. To its credit, SpellPunk VR does have both ranked and casual matches without her players, giving you a goal to work towards as you climb the leaderboards. I just wish there was some other way to enjoy this game without having to rely on other people being active. There is currently a warmup room that lets you practice your spells firing into the void that I could see easily becoming target practice with recorded high scores. Playing 1v1 against a bot is also available, but without rank, there’s not much to work towards. I feel like this would do well in some sort of campaign mode for single player progression. Whether it be these two, I think solo play needs some more love.
SpellPunk VR is currently in early access and the progress shown thus far looks great. That being said, I can still see a lot of things to improve upon. I have high hopes for this game, and I’m sure the developers would appreciate your help in making this game everything it can be.
