SPIES IN DISGUISE: Agents on the Run Review for iOS – Update

3-11-2020 – Update: the following are impressions of the new updates that were added to Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run.

The new updates to Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run bring about the mission mode and the ability to play as Eyes and Agent Eyes.

I like the new mission mode especially the confetti effect (with feathers) after finishing with 3 stars. I think it makes things a bit more exciting in Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run. The missions allow you to get more material so that you can upgrade your agents and their skills faster. The mode comes with normal and hard missions that can be started by using energy. The normal missions on the first clear will give you Agent Marcy’s character DNA but after the first clear, they won’t drop any more character DNA. If you clear all the normal missions, you can get Agent Marcy! The hard missions (which unlock after you complete the normal missions) can drop material but on certain missions, there is a chance to drop character DNA which is nice.

I really like the color scheme of the hard missions. When I first saw it I was surprised because I didn’t expect it but it looks super cool. Although, I kind of wish the green line was red to fit with the red theme.

In terms of Eyes and Agent Eyes, I like playing as both of them. Eyes has an ability called  quantum thermography that when triggered locks in on a pickup item so you can easily detect and collect it. I found this ability very useful during mission runs because she can detect the pickup item that gives you more time. I also like Agent Eye’s spectral analysis ability that can slow down gameplay for a couple of seconds. It’s useful when the game speeds up and there are a bunch of obstacles on the field.

In future updates, I think it would be cool to include different mission locations, and if this is possible, including a storyline into the missions. Right now, the mission mode is full of missions but there’s not really a specified overarching goal. A mission storyline would make the mission mode more meaningful and fun. The beginning of each mission journey could start like the tutorial (a cutscene of the brief overview of the start of the mission). Then, each time a couple of missions have been completed, a cutscene could be shown of what some of the characters are doing on the missions. It would be a good way to get to know the characters more. Another thing that I would love to see is the ability to purchase spy gadgets/power-ups at the beginning of each run. They can be temporary one time uses. It would just be nice to be able to get a headstart on the runs.

January 7, 2020: Blue Sky Studios’ hit animated spy comedy, Spies in Disguise, has come to mobile! Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run is an endless action-filled runner game developed by Denali Publishing. If you like Spies in Disguise and/or games like Temple Run and Subway Surfers then I’d definitely recommend checking out this game!

In Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run, there are 5 characters that you can play as: Walter Beckett, Agency Walter, Marcy Kappel, Agent Marcy, and Lance Sterling. Each character has their own abilities and gadgets that can be upgraded with enough materials and coins. Marcy and Lance also have cars that you can drive!

When the game first starts, you play as Lance Sterling and Joy tells Lance about the mission he is being put on while Lance is already in action. I appreciated the voice acting and the fact that the opening tutorial set up the scene. Unfortunately, after the tutorial, you can no longer play as Lance with his flying gadget and sweet car. Gotta say, I was a bit disappointed. But fret not, you can unlock Lance by logging in for 30 days or get fragments that unlock him by completing daily tasks. Beware though, the log in streak does break if you forget to log in for a day.

The character that you first unlock is Walter Beckett, who’s adorable! When the obstacle cars come, Walter shouts “Whoa, watch out!” I think it’s a nice touch and makes me smile.

In terms of gameplay, you basically play as one of the characters from Spies in Disguise and are trying to run the farthest, avoiding any obstacles that come your way by either ducking (swiping down) or jumping (swiping up) and moving left to right. On your run/mission, there are pickups (briefcases) that contain materials needed for upgrading your characters and their abilities. There are also pigeons that help you for 10 seconds on your run should you pick them up. One of them destroys obstacles in your way, another picks up coins for you, and another recovers you if you get knocked out. The pigeons are honestly so cute! I also like how the game gives you a chance to keep running from where you got knocked out for free.

I believe every 4 days, the missions reset and if your high score allows you to move up a league then you get promoted to the next one. Each league does have ranks so it really is like you’re competing against other “agents” to become the best agent. I also think as you move up leagues, your missions/areas that you run through change but I can’t say for certain since I only got to League 2 which is still the same area as League 1: Washington D.C. If it does change then that’s really cool and if it doesn’t, then that would be a really cool thing to implement.

Another thing that I liked was how you can personalize your profile. It makes me feel like a special agent!

As for my rating, I would give Spies in Disguise: Agents on the Run an 8.5/10. I really like the spy theme and it looks like it incorporates elements from Spies in Disguise well but it doesn’t interest me all that much since it does get repetitive. I noticed that the characters run a bit weird but then I think that adds a comedic effect to the game which is good since Spies in Disguise is a comedy. Also, this isn’t that big of a deal but I did notice that every time I open the game, it takes a while for the game to load. What really messes with me is the fact that the music will come on but the screen is still (just the title screen), the progress bar has yet to show up. I feel like it would be better if the progress bar shows up right at the start or it shows up when the music starts.

I'm a sophomore studying Computer Science at the University of Michigan. I'm really interested in how technology can impact lives through game development. One of the things that I really like about gaming is that, not only is it fun and relaxing, but there are so many ideas you can incorporate into games and their storylines such as meaningful lessons/messages.
