Super Cat Tales 2 Review for iOS

Super Cat Tales 2 Review for iOS

Super Cat Tales 2 is a platformer/adventure game developed by Neutronized and the sequel to Super Cat Tales. The final content update was released in May 2020 so now the game is officially complete in terms of the story.

Super Cat Tales 2 is honestly so adorable. I had fun playing as different cats.

The game functions are similar to other platformer games, like Super Mario, where there are several different worlds (seven I believe) and each world has different levels to complete. I love how each level has the unfound collectables circling around its square. It makes it easier to tell which levels have been completed perfectly and which ones still have things to collect.

Storywise, it is up to Alex (the main cat/character) and his Super Cat Crew to defeat the Tin Army before they destroy the world. I haven’t played the first Super Cat Tales game but I was told story timeline-wise, Super Cat Tales 2 actually takes place before Super Cat Tales. So, although Super Cat Tales 2 is the sequel, I don’t think that it is necessary to play Super Cat Tales first before playing Super Cat Tales 2.

Sometimes during levels, there will be cutscenes that unravel the story. I really liked all the scenes so far and enjoyed seeing the interactions between the cats and other characters.

As you adventure and progress deeper into the game, you may encounter different cats that will join your team. I believe there are 9 playable cats: Alex, McMeow, Shinji, Kuro, Amy, Brutus, Olli, Luna, and Robo Kitty. Each cat has different abilities that are useful in different situations. For example, McMeow can run into enemies and kill them and Shinji can swim against strong water currents. Players can switch cats by clicking on the gray cat icon on the top left throughout the levels.

In terms of gameplay, the controls are quite simple. Players tap and hold on the left and right side of the screen to move the cats left and right respectively and can double tap and hold to make the cats run in the intended direction.

Walking into enemies will stun you for a couple of seconds if you are not running into the enemies as McMeow. I also noticed that if you get hit again when stunned then you die. But if the stun period is over and you get hit by an enemy, then you can continue on. I did like this feature. If you happen to die, there’s a chance to watch an ad and be revived.

In each level, there are 3 bells that are hidden and meant to be collected and many coins to collect. The more coins that you obtain, the better because coins can be used to unlock items in the shop. At the end of each level, you can get double the amount of coins by watching a video.

Currently, there are 12 items in the shop. It can be accessed by clicking on the gold square in the top left, next to the button to switch cats. The items are quite expensive. Some of them are necessary to unlock certain secret passageways or to get some collectable bells.

I would rate Super Cat Tales 2 a 9.5/10. I really enjoyed playing the game. The graphics are adorable, the cats are so cute, and the sound effects and music added to the gameplay. After finding out that this game was created by such a small team, it made me appreciate it even more. However, the controls were a little bit frustrating. I wish instead of double tapping and holding to run, there could be something else to toggle the switch between walking and running. I also would love if instead of running to jump off of platform edges, we could swipe up to jump.

Additionally, I wish there was a feature where the enemies drop coins when they are killed.

I'm a sophomore studying Computer Science at the University of Michigan. I'm really interested in how technology can impact lives through game development. One of the things that I really like about gaming is that, not only is it fun and relaxing, but there are so many ideas you can incorporate into games and their storylines such as meaningful lessons/messages.
