The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters Review for Xbox One

Horror games have never been something I sought out when looking for the next game to play. Not that I don’t have interest in them, more so that it always feels like I always have a game ahead of them on my list. That is why I’m glad I got a chance to play The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters by publisher Chorus Worldwide Games and developer Devespresso Games, on Xbox One, a Korean anime style horror game.ublisher Chorus Worldwide Games and developer Devespresso Games, on Xbox One, a Korean anime style horror game. Vicious Sisters is the second installment of the Coma series, the first being The Coma: Cutting Glass. I have not had a chance to play the first Coma game but as far as I can tell, it is not necessary for playing Vicious Sisters.

The story follows Mina Park, a high school student at Sehwa High School. At the start of the game Mina explains to the audience that her friend  Youngho was put in a coma for unknown reasons and it was affecting her a lot. The very start of the game has a lot of regular high school tropes, note passing, talking about crushes in the bathroom, etc. This is all just for the player to get used to gameplay and learn about mechanics that become a lot more important later on in the game. Things get a little weirder for Mina when she wanders into an old storage room of her school to find an odd shrine where she reads a note and promptly passes out. When she awakes she is still in her high school, but it is not the same. Mina is in the Coma, a scarier, more dangerous version of her previous world where your top priority becomes to survive. This is where the rest of the game starts.

The gameplay can seem like a little much at first, like the game is just throwing mechanics at you really fast, but it is actually pretty intuitive and straightforward. It works like a simple 2D side scroller. You have your map of the area, your inventory, health and stamina. As health depletes from getting hit by enemies, you have to repair yourself either with bandages or food, both of which you can get from vending machines throughout the game. Your stamina will also deplete by running. Stamina, unlike health, will automatically regenerate, but if you need it back up immediately to keep running, there are items that will replenish it instantly.

The main mechanic of the game is hiding. As Mina, you are being chased and attacked by demons and monsters, mainly one (which I won’t spoil) but other smaller monsters will throw one off attacks at you occasionally. For the most part, you will hear a noise or catch a visual queue and have to run to the nearest desk or closet to hide while the monster runs past you. It’s not super flashy but it’s simple and doesn’t really get stale.

One thing that deserves to be mentioned about The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is how amazing the art style is. The game has an anime style to the drawings. However, the animation is more like a comic or manga. The cutscenes are more like watching the panels of a comic but with slight animations to them. It looks really good and works to the players advantage as it can make the scenes even more intense and suspenseful. Another thing I really liked is that the game gives you however much game you want. If you want to play a lot of this game and get a lot of collectibles, you can. If you just want to play through the main story for a quick horror game, you can.

For what it is and what it is supposed to be, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is good at doing its job. It gives you the horror game experience without cheap jumpscares and makes you feel like you have to fight to survive. As far as video games go, horror games specifically, it doesn’t do a whole lot new or revolutionary. It’s a good game, but doesn’t do much to put it above and beyond.
