Wintermoor Tactics Club, developed by EVC and published by Versus Evil, follows several characters making their way through high school in the only way they know how: by playing Curses and Catacombs, or C & C. Their one escape is threatened by the War of Clubs, which determines the school club that will become the Ultimate Club.

Alicia must unite with her friends in saving their club, using the one skill they are all good at: tactics. One by one, the Wintermoor Tactics Club must battle each club to earn the title of the Ultimate Club. The gameplay is inspired by tactics RPGs and visual novels. It seems to have also been inspired by the board game Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D. Or, at least that’s what this game reminded me of. These high schoolers created a club in order to play their board game where they are given a situation in the fantasy world and they are supposed to fight the monsters that appear on the board or get killed by them instead.

These kids must have vivid imaginations! The player is often transported onto their battlefield when entering into the Curses and Catacombs game, allowing them to choose the actions of the players on the board. When all of the players have exhausted their turns, it becomes the enemy’s turn. If you’re not careful, the enemy will cause your player enough damage to kill them and erase them from the game. The other players must continue to play and destroy the monsters after a player has been killed before they themselves get killed.

Winning battles advances the player through the game and onto the next quest on the mission to become the Ultimate Club. Just like in high school, the players will be constantly confronted and challenged by the kids in the other clubs on campus. Who could blame them though? All of the clubs are fighting for a single spot. As the player advances farther through the game, they will meet more clubs and be challenged to a snowball fight with them, which they play as if it were just a game of Curses and Catacombs.

After each battle, Alicia and her friends advance closer to their main objective. Along their way, they find that the key to saving their club is to revamp their brand and emerge as fantasy heroes from nerdy nobodies and to live to tell the tale. With every new note and dialogue, the sound effects are anchored to the sound of a pencil writing on paper, as if it were being written at the same moment the player is reading it. Each character has the ability to react realistically at surprising situations, and Alicia is given choices to determine the fate of some situations. I never made a bad choice in the game, but I can imagine that there is probably a consequence of choosing the wrong option in certain situations. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, and it is a game that people of all ages can enjoy. I would rate Wintermoor Tactics Club a 9 out of 10.

I am an army veteran and currently a sophomore at Portland State University majoring in English. I have always looked to gaming as an outlet outside of my everyday life and a way to experiment with playing different types of games and take on new and exciting characters with different backgrounds. It's kind of like getting to become a new person every time you play a game.
