If you have not played Warcraft, then your friends probably played it. A portal opens between the world of humans and orcs, and a war between the races begins. Warcraft was a milestone in the development of games, but it owes its appearance to two other iconic games.

The Dune II strategy based on the novel “Dune” by Frank Herbert was released back in 1992. The founders of Blizzard Entertainment spent many days collecting a valuable spice substance on a desert planet and developing their base with the proceeds from it to capture the entire planet.

Another idea was thrown by Doom. This first-person shooter was released in 1993 and, among other things, made it possible to play not alone, but over the network.

Introduced in 1994, WarCraft: Orcs & Humans resembled Dune II, but only in Tolkien’s world. It was possible to play both against a computer and another player via a local network or modem. WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness, released the following year, allowed eight players to fight and became a bestseller.

Further, inspired by the game Everquest, the developers took up a new masterpiece – World of Warcraft. In it, the player controls one character and can complete tasks alone, but the more difficult the level, the more often you have to team up with other players to complete it. When Blizzard Entertainment released this game at the end of 2004, it made an unfortunate miscalculation. The game was the first in the studio’s portfolio to be provided to players on a monthly subscription basis. The founders decided that because of the new payment system, there would be little demand at first. All decisions on computing power and circulation (then games were sold in boxes in stores) were based on this conservative forecast. But, to the joy and horror of the creators, the game was immediately snatched from the shelves.

At its peak in 2010, about 12 million people played World of Warcraft. But by 2018, the number of players dropped to 2 million. It has amassed a plethora of players over the years, including celebrities like Mila Kunis! So, how many people are still playing the vast online game? Monthly data on how many players participated in the session alternately increased and decreased. However, lately, it has been averaging between 5 and 6 million players per month. Released in August 2019, World of Warcraft Classic resurrected the game roughly as it was 15 years ago. At first, the bet paid off. There were so many players, each paying $15 for a monthly subscription, that they sometimes had to wait hours for their turn to join the battle. At the same time, the novelties of 2021 – The Burning Crusade Classic and Diablo II: Resurrected – did not attract the audience in the same volume as add-ons to the current version of WoW.

Whether the game will be back in demand by players due to Blizzard’s recent acquisition by Microsoft remains to be seen, but it still looks good for now, even if it’s not at the top of the gaming food chain like it used to be.
