Over 230 Veterans participated in the tournament (more than 2/3rd of all players), with 104 competing in the July 25th Qualifiers. Throughout June and July players took part in three official training sessions before the qualifiers and now only eight teams remain from a starting total of 32.
Teams that made it to the Finals were given a choice of one of 15 Veteran charities to donate their share of Verizon’s $100,000 prize pool. The winning team’s chosen charity will receive the largest share of the money, with each subsequent lower-ranked team’s charity getting a proportionally smaller share. Additionally, the seven unpicked charities will also receive a smaller equal share of the prize pool:
Each final team has one or more verified Veterans on the roster. The eight final teams and their selected charities are as follows:
Team | Charity |
Blue Falcons | Gary Sinise Foundation |
Double the Fun | Disabled American Veterans |
Flying Philosopher | Blue Star Family |
Iconic Fleet of Heroic Ephraim | Burnpits360 |
Jedi | Warrior Freedom Service Dogs |
Small Boat Navy | Guitars for Vets |
The Fire Kitchen | USO |
Where’s the W Key | Veterans for Foreign Wars |
“We believe it’s our duty to support organizations that care for the men and women who have served our country and are proud to continue our efforts by partnering once again with Wargaming,” said David M. Caruth, Head of Military segment. “What these organizations do to support our nation’s heroes is commendable and it’s through programs like the Verizon Wounded Warrior Series that we help to raise awareness and much needed funds to assist with their missions to help our soldiers.” Click here for impactful interviews with Veterans on the benefits of video games.
In addition to the $100,000 prize pool donated by Verizon, the livestreams have been raising money throughout the series for the Wounded Warrior Project and have already more than doubled the $10,000 fundraising goal. Donations will be open until August 8th, 4:45pm PT.
“We are proud to partner with Verizon once again to support the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Artur Plociennik, World of Warships’ Regional Publishing Director. “We have an incredible community of players always eager to help and this time was no different. A significant number of our players are either Veterans or servicemembers and it’s important to us to support organizations that have a direct, positive impact on our community.”
Each fundraising milestone included a random draw prize for anyone who donated, with the current and final prize being a Toaster signed by actor Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick), who participated in the tournament training sessions.
