At first, the town of Portsbourgh is peaceful, calm, and unfortunately, a bit boring for the fiery twins, Jenn and Tristan. What’s a couple of teenagers supposed to do in a place like this when the most exciting part of their day is selling some junk at the pawn shop? Well, how about suddenly finding out that there is a secret goblin society right beneath their feet and their foster father has been kidnapped! Developed by 1P2P and published by The Arcade Crew, Young Souls is an action-packed, 2-D RPG filled with courageous feats and even some potty mouth dialogue. Not only will you be in drawn into its awesome art style and game graphics, but the charming characters and captivating story will have you returning for more.
As most young adolescent teens are, Jenn and Tristan have a rebellious streak and a dislike for authority. Despite being adopted and cared for by the professor, they are hesitant to truly acknowledge him as their dad. It’s only until he’s been taken prisoner by a tyrannical goblin that the twins soon realize that they would do whatever it takes to rescue him. Luckily the professor has just as many allies as he has enemies and with the help of other goblin folk, such as Baldwin, these two twins are ready to make some trouble.
As with many other classic RPG games, there are multiple dungeons to explore, full of loot and monsters alike. Be sure not to miss those vases and wooden crates lying around as they can contain some useful materials and coins. Collect and enhance your armor and weapons to become a deadly dueling double in the battlefield. While you can add poison to your blades or make your axe heavy with concussion-inducing abilities, don’t forget that you can upgrade your drip in the human world too. The sneaker store in Portsbourgh has both the latest in footwear fashion and stat increasing shoes. Kicking ass never looked so good.
A great game mechanic in Young Souls is how you can speed through scenes. With the sound of sped up audio, and bands of color reminiscent of static, it’s a lot like fast forwarding a VCR tape. If only this ability to speed up could be applied during moon gate encounters and the map animation that follows as both these scenes are unskippable and slow. Other than these nitpicky examples, Young Souls is still a fantastic game to play either solo, or with a friend. No quote rings truer to what Jenn and Tristan represent than the famous Team Rocket quote, “Prepare for Trouble! And make it double!”, as these two heroes are ready to shake up both the goblin and human world.
PROS: Fantastic art style, interesting storyline, dynamic and delightful characters.
CONS: The timing in some fight sequences and a few other areas of the game such as moon gates located on maps are laggy. Steam Remote Play has a habit of disconnecting when playing with others.
SCORE: 8/10

Video games have always been a huge influence in my life and have definitely shaped me to who I am today . Some of my best memories growing up were the many adventures and stories I was able to experience and become immersed in. If my hands aren't either covered in clay, typing, editing, creating, or helping shoving food in my mouth, they would either be gripped to a controller, tapping away at the screen of my phone, or clicking away on my PC. I am always up for trying something new because why live just one life when you can live many.
