Ever since the 1969 premiere of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Zombies have invaded popular culture to take their place as one of the most famous movie monsters. There there have been Emmy winning TV shows, movies, and strange apocalyptic conspiracy theories that have come out of the rise of zombies in popular culture, but none more prevalent than video games. Zombie hordes of every type have invaded the world of video games so it can be tough to find a way to make new games interesting, but Zombie Army 4: Dead War by Rebellion is a fantastic addition to a long line of zombie games.
Set in an alternate history post WW2, Hitler has released a horde of the dead on the world in his last-ditch effort to defeat the allies. However, the zombie hoard doesn’t stop even when the allies have defeated Hitler. This leaves the world on the brink of falling apart and your character is a part of the resistance. An unexpected surprise in this game was the customizability of your presence in the game. You can choose one of several different characters for your journey through the story. You also choose the perks you equip to your character. You can also unlock different attachments for your weapons that offer abilities like electrically charged ammunition to help you conquer the zombie horde. Plus, there’s new content being released for the game to further expand your customization options.
The game is played in third person and your character travels through the post-apocalyptic version of European cities like Venice. Throughout the campaign missions, there was a variety of interesting environments and different classes of zombies to fight. These different classes included snipers (responsible for the highest number of my deaths) and the suicide bombers (2nd highest number of deaths) in addition to the usual suspects like runners and zombies that have mastered guns. There are even boss fights where overgrown zombies carry flamethrowers and other crazy weapons to derail your character’s quest to save the world. No matter what aspect of the game, it all worked together perfectly to deliver an experience that really immerses the player in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is falling apart. My favorite feature had to be the animations that followed the bullet through the air when your shot was traveling towards a critical area of the zombie.
With most games, there is something that didn’t work for me. Some part that just didn’t fit or didn’t work, but I genuinely couldn’t find anything in Zombie Army 4: Dead War I didn’t like. The controls were easy to pick up, the missions were interesting, there’s a variety of game modes, and I just had a great time playing this game. Every environment in every game mode was fantastic and just really built a fantastic environment for the player.
Overall, Zombie Army 4: Dead War was a fantastic game that I had a great time playing. Zombie games have never been one of my preferred genres, but I had an absolute blast playing this game and found myself genuinely scared at some of the zombie hordes. Regardless of if you’re a zombie game veteran or a newbie like me, Zombie Army 4: Dead War is definitely worth adding to your collection.

My first console was the original Playstation and I would play Twisted Metal every now and then but games didn't hook me until I played the original Halo at my friend's house. As soon as I picked up that controller, I knew I needed an Xbox and I had to have that game.
