There was a time when everything gamers all around the world wanted was the possibility of playing games and being paid to do it. Since the rise in online gaming, this has become a reality. And now, with the advancement of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, plus the development of crypto games, earning money while playing is easier than ever.
The offer of crypto games is still limited, as developers continuously improve the blockchain platforms, but there are some options available, ranging from virtual pets and collection games to strategy ones… and there is The Sandbox. The Sandbox is an upcoming decentralized gaming experience based on the Ethereum blockchain, in which you can create worlds and interactive adventures, buy and sell assets, and use non-fungible tokens to retain ownership of anything you create, which means content rights are held by the players, not the publishers.
In the Sandbox, everything is dealt in SAND, the game’s own cryptocurrency. With SAND, you can buy LANDs, trade in the marketplace, access other players’ worlds and levels, play games and buy equipment for your avatar, granting players total control over their creations, all secure from hacking and frauds.
Features and Gameplay
Built on the Ethereum blockchain, The Sandbox is a virtual ecosystem, with its own revolving metaverse, in which players can design their worlds and characters, create multiple adventures and narratives, and build assets that can be traded with other players.
The game uses three integrated tools to make all this work: VoxEdit, Game Maker and Marketplace. Through VoxEdit, players can design 3D objects that are the base for Sandbox’s assets, from scenery to avatars and animals. With Game Maker, players can place these assets on LANDs, pieces of virtual land in the metaverse that can be purchased with SAND, and also apply gameplay mechanics and interactive adventures to their worlds. Then, everything you create can be exported to the Marketplace, where you can buy other players’ assets and sell yours.
The Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are the tools that make it possible for players to retain control and ownership over all their content, and can’t be interchanged, meaning once an asset has been created, it is bound to its creator.
SAND
The in-game currency is called SAND, and it’s a main part of the gameplay. It is an ERC-20 utility token used for every transaction performed in the Sandbox.
As a player, you can use SAND to play games, visit other players’ worlds and join their adventures, and buy equipment to customize your avatar. But as creator, you can use it to purchase LANDs, the game’s own building lots. In these LANDs, you can build your worlds, place your assets, and create adventures for other players to join.
You can make SAND by having other players’ joining your adventures, or by selling your assets in the Marketplace. But you can also trade in The Sandbox stock market which features passive revenue systems, a fee capture model and staking pool rewards. As SAND acts as a governance token as well, you can be a part of important decisions regarding the game’s metaverse, and the more SAND and LAND you have, the more voting rights you will have in the Sandbox future rulings.
There is also a system that offers grants to creators, called the Foundation. It’s already funded 15 game projects, even though the game is still in its opened beta phase, and many more are expected to be awarded.
By using its own cryptocurrency, The Sandbox offers the possibility for players who want to leave the game to recover the investments made, through sales in the Marketplace, and even converting back SAND into real money.
Unlike other games in which the rights to everything players create belong to the publishing company, The Sandbox was created to give players total control over every aspect of the game, rewarding creativity and entrepreneurship, by allowing gamers to create and play their own adventures, while earning money to do so.
