Coming to you live from the realm of Fire, Counterplay Games is bringing a whole slew of new enemies, new storylines, and a brand new Co-op mode to test your fortitude. Godfall: Fire & Darkness is a high-level expansion meant to truly push your build in a variety of ways. So grab a friend, your favorite Valorplate, and get ready to hunt down some gear in the brand new Lightbringer mode!
Story
Darkness has, once again, besieged the light. As the last of the Valorian Knights, you are charged with defending the realm of light and taking down a former ally before they have the opportunity to bring about the End Times. As a knight, you must battle against the forces of darkness, either alone or with 2 friends, across the four different elemental realms and stomp out the forces of Darkness before they take root. With the newest expansion, Fire & Darkness, Counterplay Games has introduced Lightbringer Mode, which highlights the great struggle as you actively fight through the heart of Darkness to bring light to the realm before it is too late.
Gameplay & Mechanics
While combat and other gameplay mechanics mostly stay the same, the true gameplay changes in Godfall: Fire & Darkness come in the form of the new Lightbringer Mode. Here, you will be challenged with braving the corrupting darkness of your chosen realm. While bathed in this blackness, you will slowly become corrupted by its evil and, if your corruption counter reaches 100, you die. You can fight off this corruption by activating beacons of light along the way to your objective. Seal the Dark Tears by defeating waves of increasingly powerful enemies and, as you do so, you will be rewarded with powerful Curses that place debilitating effects on your character. Different curses grant different ailments, such as decreasing your overall health or lowering your defense against ailments. These curses come in three different levels and, as you select them, it also increases the strength and ferocity of the enemies you face.
Once the Dark Tear is sealed, you will then have to guide a Sanctum of Light back to your main base. Enemies will spawn in the darkness and attempt to drain the light from your charge. You must fend them off before they are successful and, once you have delivered it to your base, you will then face waves of increasingly deadly foes until a final boss appears. Successfully conquer these waves, and you will have the opportunity to either end your campaign and collect the loot you’ve earned, or venture off to seal more Dark Tears, effectively raising your Light levels and earning even more powerful treasures! Depending on your Light level at the end of your encounter, you may have the chance to earn Cursed Loot. These are powerful weapons that, while strong, carry with them debilitating effects meant to hinder your ability. But, if you are able to master these weapons and complete the required challenges, you will unlock their ascended forms, which are far more powerful than any other legendary gear so far released. Aesthetics & Sound
Godfall: Fire & Darkness is a stunningly beautiful action title with gorgeous cinematics and astonishing character models. The Valorplates are absolutely gorgeous and so much detail went into making each one a varied and unique experience. On top of that, each Valorplate comes with its own set of challenges you can complete in order to unlock further cosmetics for each one: for the overachiever in all of us out there, Counterplay is truly over delivering. Aside from the Valorplates, the gorgeous worldscapes and varied enemies make each elemental realm feel fresh and different from the last. The new Fire realm is truly an epic hellscape to behold. Be careful: there are some explosive secrets in this area that will end your run before you even knew what happened!
Summary
I enjoyed my time with Godfall: Fire & Darkness. I always approach any looter game with some semblance of hesitation, but Counterplay Games has done an amazing job creating a fun experience that celebrates the grind instead of greedily monetizing it. Godfall: Fire & Darkness happily rewards its players for their hard work, tenacity, and drive with exactly what they’re working towards: better gear and high-level gameplay. This is an action title that’s definitely worth its weight in gold and I hope anyone who tries it out enjoys it as much as I have.
