Happy’s Humble Burger Farm Review for PlayStation

Released in October of last year originally on Steam, Happy’s Humble Burger Farm, by developer Scythe Dev Team and publisher tinyBuild, makes its way to consoles this week. The developers created a very eerie and interesting project here. This survival horror, while primitive in its graphics, makes up for in a ton of lore building. Many of which can be easy to miss if you don’t pay attention. I hadn’t heard of this franchise before and a part of me thought it was going to be something akin to Overcooked. Boy, was I wrong! While you are flipping burgers a good amount of the time, the two games are nothing alike, which is a good thing.

You play as a new employee for the burger farm restaurant. You are given a manual in which you are asked to follow VERY STRICTLY. As long as you do your job exactly as the company likes, you should be fine to live and serve another day. With each passing day, you start back at your apartment and may discover some more important clues to the overall mystery. Unfortunately for me, I struggled following directions to their exact specifications and the more you mess up, the more money you lose, as well as getting hunted by creepy figures in the dark. If the lights randomly turn off for no reason at all, it probably means you’re messing up and there’s something that wants to come and attack you. Happy’s Humble Burger Farm quickly feels like something out of a Five Nights at Freddy’s experience, with the survival horror in a weird eerie environment with colorful mascots.

Using your money, you can unlock a bunch of things, mostly for fun related, such as decorating your apartment, but others you’ll need to dish out some cash to further the story. There’s a lot of the town to explore, such as small shops, but if you don’t have too much experience with these explorative horror survival games, I can see this one being a little tricky at times with figuring out what you need to do, or at least how to do it. The gameplay itself can also be a bit on the wonky side, everything is simplified maybe to even a detrimental degree. With it’s Playstation 1 style in primitive graphics, the controls harken back to that era as well and just doesn’t feel as easy to play as a game like this could be. While this is probably a creative decision, its just not one I personally gelled with.

While the low-resolution graphics may add to the overall charm of this stylized survival horror, I can’t help but feel like it was a convenient way to cut corners and make things for the developers easier to accomplish. There are issues I had with reading important story notes I found where I wanted to read what it said, but the resolution was so low I couldn’t make out what the text was saying. I believe there could have been a steadier mix or retro graphics and modern graphics to make this package feel a bit more complete.

Overall, for a $20 game, this one isn’t too bad. If you are into the survival horror first person experience, I would absolutely say this one is worth checking out. There’s enough creativity and lore to uncover that will make for a good time. As well as all the jump scares and moments of dread that the genre offers.

7/10
