Last month Square Enix and Deck Nine released Life Is Strange: True Colors (you can check out my review of that HERE), and now they’ve released an interesting piece of downloadable content that explores the past of one of the main characters in LIFE IS STRANGE: True Colors – Wavelengths DLC. If you haven’t taken the time to read my review of True Colors, spoiler alert, I loved it! While as far as this piece of DLC, I personally was let down a bit. Maybe it was my high expectations, but I guess I wanted a little more.
In this DLC, you play as Steph, a character who you have the option to romance in “True Colors” and learn a little bit about her past in Seattle. Having this content take place before the events of the main game, we get to see a bit more behind the curtain. Starting off with Steph’s first day at the record store and being a DJ on the local radio channel. Throughout the story, time skips seasons, but unfortunately, you’re constantly stuck inside the record store. My biggest gripe is that it’s all in the record store and DJ studio booth. All of your interactions with people are basically voices from phone calls.
A lot of the same elements from the main game carry over. Great dialogue, great music, but you also get the usual check list of things to do. While normally that wasn’t a big deal, when you’re in the same place the entire game it begins to feel more tedious than anything. It does it’s best to tell a good story about Steph, but the monotonous experience of it made the overall experience lesser so. Another problem I had was there are zero trophies/achievements for this DLC. Something that really could help some players want to explore more of what “Wavelengths” is trying to give us.
All in all, it’s a little bit of a mixed bag for me. I love the story and characters, so this content does a good job at revealing more fanfare content. But the isolation and repetitiveness of only being in one location really made it a struggle. Perhaps, I needed to be in the right mood for this type of experience, but I’m sad to say I wasn’t. Luckily, I did power through, and the story that was told was in fact enjoyable for me, so it’s tough to knock on it too much. I’m curious if they plan to explore more stories in Haven Springs, I just hope if they do, they don’t make it so claustrophobic.
7/10

Gaming since I was given an original Nintendo as a kid. I love great storytelling and unique ingenuity. When both collide in a single game, I'm a happy gamer. Twitter/IG @NickNavarro87
