Moroi is a grimdark action-adventure game developed by Violet Saint and published by Good Shepherd Entertainment. Inspired by Romanian folklore and featuring a distinct Lynchian surrealist art style with a heavy metal soundtrack, Moroi casts players as a protagonist who awakens in a bizarre prison with no memory of their past. Player’s job is to figure out how to escape this messed-up place called the Cosmic Engine.
The game looks super unique – think of a dark fairytale that feels a bit like a bad dream. The music is awesome too, lots of heavy metal that really kicks in when you’re fighting.
The player has to run around from a bird’s-eye view, hacking and slashing at all sorts of nasty, undead creatures. You get some pretty wild weapons too, not just your usual swords. You can even swap your arm out for a ranged weapon! And when you beat the bad guys, you can do these really over-the-top, gory finishing moves.
It’s not all just whacking monsters, though. You’ll also have to scratch your head and solve puzzles. These aren’t your everyday puzzles either. You might have to do some seriously strange stuff, like drinking blood or throwing up objects, to figure things out. It fits the whole bizarre vibe of the game.
The story is a bit of a head-scratcher at first since your character has amnesia. You piece things together by meeting all sorts of odd and creepy characters in this world. Talking to all the NPCs and most of the time the NPCs straight-up die after you complete a request with them. Depending on certain situations, the game has different endings players can achieve.
The story can get pretty out there and might be confusing for some folks. It’s not a straightforward tale. There are a few technical hiccups, like the infrequent crashes and Steam update for the game got corrupted for me. I had to completely uninstall and reinstall the game a few times. Also, the UI is very generic. And after a certain point the game becomes a similar loop of figuring out the area, talking to the NPCs, collecting items, and solving puzzles, and at last combat, which is pretty much repetitive after a couple of areas you exit out of.
Moroi Overall:
Moroi seems like a wild ride for people who like their games dark, weird, and action-packed. If you’re tired of the same old fantasy stuff and want something that will surprise you with its style and strangeness, this might be worth checking out on Steam. I would give this game 7 out of 10.
Moroi is available for PC via Steam.
