Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster Review for PlayStation 5

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster Review

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster, from Capcom, brings a beloved PlayStation 2 classic to modern platforms. It’s not a full remake, so don’t expect a total revamp, but it does a good job of letting both old fans and new players experience this unique samurai action-adventure.

Experience Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster as Jubei Yagyu, battling demons in a reimagined feudal Japan. While honoring the original’s core, this remaster elevates the demon-slaying action with enhanced visuals and refined gameplay. Master a diverse arsenal of elemental weapons, each imbued with unique combat mechanics, to strategically overcome formidable foes. The “Issen” counter-attack, a well-timed strike that instantly defeats enemies, remains a highlight.

While the fixed camera angles, reminiscent of classic Resident Evil, might appeal to some for their nostalgic charm, they can still lead to obstructed views or disorientation in new areas. The remaster introduces several significant improvements, most notably modern analog stick controls that replace the original’s cumbersome “tank controls”—though the latter remains an option for purists. Real-time weapon switching enhances combat flow. This remastered version introduces an invaluable auto-save function, a welcome departure from the original’s dependency on fixed save points.

Visually, the remaster offers a notable upgrade, though not a complete transformation. When HD polish is applied to character models, enemies, and especially the pre-rendered backgrounds, the aesthetic is noticeably sharper and cleaner—a clear upgrade from the pixelated PS2 version. Cutscenes are also improved, now displayed in a 16:9 ratio (with a 4:3 option for classic viewing). These visual adjustments effectively bring the game’s unique art style to life on contemporary screens.

In addition to a comprehensive overhaul of its visual presentation and significant refinements to its control scheme, the remaster also introduces a suite of highly attractive bonuses. These additions aim to enrich the player’s experience beyond mere graphical and mechanical upgrades, offering new content and incentives that both long-time fans and newcomers will appreciate. Players can now choose between an “Easy” mode or the challenging “Hell” mode, where a single hit means game over. All mini-games and extra modes, such as “The Man in Black” and “Puzzle Phantom Realm,” are immediately accessible, offering ample content. A new gallery provides access to over 100 pieces of original artwork and the full soundtrack. Furthermore, in-game text has been refined for a better English translation, and surprisingly, players can now switch between English and Japanese voice acting. While not a complete overhaul, these numerous tweaks make Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remaster more user-friendly and enjoyable for players in 2025.

Score: 9/10
