PAX East 2025: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Impressions

Okay, let me tell you, getting my hands on the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake at PAX East 2025 was easily one of my highlights! I’d been hyped, but seeing it live? Wow. It felt like they reached into my childhood memories and polished them up into something brand new and utterly gorgeous.

The moment the demo loaded, those HD-2D visuals just grabbed me. You know how much I adore that style, and this might be their best work yet. The way the classic pixel characters just popped against those lush, almost 3D-looking backgrounds was incredible. I spent a good few minutes just wandering around, admiring the shimmering water and how the light played in the dungeons. It felt so familiar, yet so dazzlingly fresh. My inner kid was doing cartwheels.

Playing it was just as cool. They’ve kept that classic Dragon Quest feel, which I was hoping for, but with some really smart changes. In Dragon Quest I, finally being able to fight more than one monster at a time? A total game-changer for me! It just felt smoother and less of a slog than I remember. And seeing Dragon Quest II‘s party bouncing around in that beautiful world was pure joy.

Knowing that the Dragon Quest III remake is already out (I loved it last year!), and now we’re getting I & II on October 30th to complete the Erdrick story in order… I am SO ready for that. They even teased some new stuff to connect them all, and my curiosity is officially piqued.

Honestly, walking away from that demo, I was buzzing. If you have any love for these classics, or even if you’re just looking for a stunning RPG, this is one you absolutely cannot miss. I’m already counting down the days!
