Introduction/Information about Starless Abyss
Starless Abyss is a game that was released recently on Steam by developer Konafa Games and publisher No More Robots, on April 25, 2025. This game is a turn-based roguelike deck builder where players will help to defend humanity against the strange alien race known as the Eldritch. Seeing how I enjoy roguelike games, I jumped straight into the action. Playing through the game, creating different decks throughout the runs, and just interacting with the overall combat of the game felt like nothing else but a really fun experience. After playing through Starless Abyss, I would say that this game is greatly designed and a truly fun experience.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Starless Abyss will have players take a part in a unique combat system. When starting, players will choose a character and jump straight into a run right after. Before each combat scenario, players will choose a path to determine their rewards for winning. These rewards can consist of money and certain items, as well as gain cards that will help players to build their deck. After choosing their path, players will then jump straight into combat. The combat of the game is easy to understand. Players have ships they can move around the board and a certain number of enemies they need to defeat in order to progress. At the start of each turn, players will draw cards from their deck. These cards consist of offensive cards in order to attack enemies, as well as defensive cards help grow defenses and stats. Of course, there is a cost to using these cards. Each cost uses up a certain amount of energy, and players only have a certain amount of max energy each turn. If they don’t have enough energy to use any cards, then there is nothing left the player can do but end the turn. As well as energy, cards will also cause possible overheating. Each ship (or unit) players have during their run has a meter that determines how much heat that ship has. If players don’t keep an eye on this, the ships can overheat. When this happens, the ships won’t be able to attack until the overheating stops. Thankfully, there are also cards that can help decrease this heat meter for ships, although these cards do still use energy. After winning a round, players will gain the rewards they chose. The most important reward (and most fun, in my opinion) is gaining more cards for the deck. Players will choose from a random selection of cards to add to their deck, each of which can range from a variety of offensive and defensive abilities. From strategizing battles to building unique and crazy decks, I believe players will have nonstop fun through each playthrough.
Final thoughts
Overall, I believe the game Starless Abyss is an amazing roguelike with a truly fun experience. After being through a small burnout of roguelike games, I was glad I got the chance to play this game. After playing through the same roguelike games, it was really nice to play one that felt so much more unique and new to play. If you are a fan of roguelike games, as well as a fan of turn-based strategy games, then I would highly recommend this game.
Score: 8.5/10
