Street Outlaws: The List Review for PlayStation 4

Street Outlaws: The List is a racing game with a heavy focus on drag racing. For those of you who don’t know, drag racing is essentially a competition to see who can go fastest in a straight line. As a fair warning, if you are not interested in drag racing or car parts, you will probably find this game very boring. This game is based on the high-speed cars and attitude of Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws and published by GameMill Entertainment.

The regular races are broken into 3 parts. First, the cars rev their wheels while holding down the brakes to achieve something called “burnout”. Then the cars are allowed to try inching up 3 times. This part is done with a line going back and forth on a meter, with a button press when the line is closer to the middle allowing for a longer inch. Then, the cars rev their engines and wait for the announcer to say “GO”. At this point, the cars release their brakes and whoever reaches the finish line first wins.

The thing is though, since this is drag racing, all of the tracks are simply a straight road. To make matters worse, if you stray outside your lane during the race, you automatically lose! While I understand that this appeals to fans of drag racing, I found it incredibly boring. Luckily, there are minigames that—in my opinion—are more entertaining than the base game.

The first of these minigames involves trying to launch off a ramp at the end of a race course to try and hit a bullseye made of pipes. The 2nd minigame is attempting to break as many of a certain item as you can within a time limit. The last of the minigames is trying to see how quickly you can race through all the checkpoints in a given stage. All 3 of these minigames take place on race courses that actually have turns and jumps . . . why aren’t these tracks in the main game again?

The races and minigames will earn you experience and money. The experience allows you to level up and eventually gain access to different cars. The money allows you to buy different parts for your car’s engine to affect its performance. I think car fans or auto mechanics would probably get a hoot out of all the different part types, but for me it just went over my head.

Everything discussed thus far is part of “career” mode. The other mode, “quick play,” allows you to quickly do a race or minigame with any car without needing to worry about car parts. It’s even possible to race against another player, although from what I can tell, there is only local multiplayer; I couldn’t find an option for online play.

Overall, I did not enjoy my time with Street Outlaws: The List, although I can see how it might appeal to fans of cars and drag racing. As such, I think a fair rating for it is 6/10.
