The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr DLC Impressions

The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr DLC Impressions

All you cat people are going to love this Elsweyr expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online. We return to Tamriel yet again, but this time, we traverse the lands of the Khajiits. And wouldn’t you know it – they have problems, too. Dragons be on the horizon, and we the (un)likely heroes will seize the day, making those hot-breathed lizards extinct … again. Unlike other expansions, you don’t need to be a veteran player to take advantage and get your paws wet. Just like Summerset, you can enter the province as soon as you complete the tutorial.

Because there is a larger attention to new players, we definitely have to mention there is a new class available, and it has some pretty cool features. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Necromancer (I still don’t trust them). Let’s take a look at its skill lines. “Grave Lord – Imbue the dead with frost, fire, and lightning to bring ruin upon your enemies. Raise relentless hordes of the undead and allow your fallen enemies to intensify your unyielding assault. Bone Tyrant – Bend and break the dead to your will and use their remains to create impenetrable barriers and extend your own life. Control the battlefield with the bones of the departed. Living Death – Draw from the power of life and death to replenish and restore your allies. Resurrect your defeated comrades and keep them in the fight.” It sounds very similar to the Necromancy in Breach, and opens up some new possibilities as a damage dealer always looking for meat shields to tank for us. Depending on how you play, you won’t even need a tank.

The new location is impressive, with its varying landscapes to its plentitude of questing, looting, exploring, fighting, and loitering. It looks kind of like how I imagined it years ago while staring at a map of Tamriel. Some of it might surprise you, though! You can reach its location by accessing any wayshrine post-tutorial. It’s large and mostly traversable just like with Summerset and the base game. We even have our chance to learn more about Khajiit culture and history aside from skooma dealings. Contrary to popular belief, they are more than just opportunistic merchants with moon-sugar crusted whiskers. They share much with Tamriel’s other provinces in their turbulent politics and aspirations.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr DLC Impressions

I like the story from the amount of the main quest that I’ve covered so far. I’m intrigued and ever-moved from place to place. People to see. People to fight. Civil strife, civil war, civil disobedience, and missing court dates. I will admit though, there does appear to be more nuance to the situation here. Dragons literally land on top of you, so the neighborhood isn’t quite safe either. But what you might not have realized is that this DLC is a part of a greater anthology, the Season of the Dragon, and it is a direct extension of the Wrathstone DLC (a dungeon pack). We have the opportunity to fight these dragons in Dragon Hunts and in a new trial, Sunspire. Unfortunately, we are not the dragonborn, so maybe look for a group or take some friends with you before you go head first into the dangerous Alkosh temple.

I’m pretty excited about this one. Summerset was bright, but Elsweyr is expansive. Look over a sandy plateau and tell me that’s not beautiful. I liked the new tutorial that transitions you into the new land very nicely. Necromancing is a good time as well. All you need are corpses, and away you go! Good thing you can resummon your pets over and over again. Maybe it is a little buggy every now and then, but it’s pretty much ready to go.

I like to think of myself as the average Joe who grew up alongside video games. I have fun playing strategy games, RPGs, shooters, sandboxes, the whole shebang! Every game provides an experience whether it strikes you as profound, mundane, or someplace in between. I'd like to weigh in my two cents before you spend a single penny.
