The game Windjammers 2, by publisher and developer Dotemu, releases today, January 20, 2022. Windjammers 2 is a sports game, and the sequel to Windjammers, which was released in 1994. Windjammers 2 keeps the arcade style that it was born from while still being modern and introducing new mechanics to the game. Players can either play against an AI or a friend, and with these new mechanics added to the game, I am sure players will enjoy this arcade-like revival.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Windjammers 2 is both very simple and very complex. At first, when the player plays, it seems to just be a simple game. All you have to do is get goals by throwing the disc into the goal. As you unwrap each layer of complexity, however, the player will realize that there is a lot more to it than just the basic idea of throwing a disc into a goal. First off, the way the game is played is the player must throw the disc into their opponent’s goal to score points. The player with the most points wins. This seems simple, but the complexity exists with how the player gets that disc into their opponent’s goal. The first layer to unwrap is how the player can get the disc into the goal. The player can either throw it straight in or bounce it off the wall to get the disc in. This is the simplest the game will get. As you unwrap the next layer, the player will realize they can curve the disc when they throw. This is a very useful mechanic when playing against your opponents. With this, the player can try to throw the disc around their opponent, screwing up the opponent’s movement.
The next layer to unwrap is adding power to the throws. From what I have played, it seems the player can power their throws, making it harder for their opponent to stop the disc from getting into their goal. One throw lets the player change the direction of the thrown disc at a ninety degree angle. Another throw allows the player to add fire to their throw, causing an explosion when the opponent tries to catch it. There are many different throws for players to try, all that will help win. While unwrapping each layer seems easy, it is much harder to execute when you are actually playing Windjammers 2. Mastering the game’s mechanics will take some practice, but will make the experience of playing the game much more fun.
Final thoughts
Overall, Windjammers 2 is a great way to revive the arcade classic. The gameplay is great, and with the new game mechanics added, players will have fun, especially when they decide to play with their friends. I believe that if you like sports, as well as an arcade style game that has no story and is just meant to be played, then this is the game for you.
