Wizard With A Gun Review for PlayStation 5

Embarking on the mystical journey of “Wizard With A Gun,” developed by Galvanic Games and published by the wacky gaming maestros at Devolver Digital, I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into besides an enchanting online cooperative sandbox survival game. The game’s top-down isometric style camera guided me through diverse biomes, either as a lone adventurer or in the delightful company of friends. The initial steps in the game bestowed upon me the power to mold my own destiny as a gun-mancer, a wizard of my creation. The customization options were more than I was expecting, allowing me to tweak everything from clothing and accessories to the shape and of my character’s eyes. It was a personal touch that set the stage for this stylized cartoony adventure.

The story unfolded across two distinct realms—the mysterious Shatter and the towering haven known simply as The Tower. The latter served as a central hub, a place to not only fine-tune my character but also delve into the game’s rich lore and engage in the craft of magic. This is also where you find the Chronomancer’s wheel, a captivating time machine that has seen better days, perhaps it’s up to you to fix it up a bit. Cog pieces, scattered throughout The Shatter, were the keys to unlocking the mysteries of time, each guarded by formidable foes. The beginning of the game cast me into a world devoid of weapons, prompting me to scavenge for materials to forge my first rudimentary firearm—crafted from the simplicity of wood. The part of the journey was just the start of an evolution, and as I traversed the landscape, my arsenal grew more sophisticated. From basic pistols to powerful rifles, shotguns, and even submachine guns, the game’s crafting system mirrored the progression of my newfound magical prowess.

The introduction of elemental bullet types added an exhilarating layer to the gameplay. Thunder crackled, water flowed, fire raged, and poison seeped through my bullets, introducing strategic depth and a visual spectacle to battles against otherworldly adversaries. Yet, not every aspect of the game was a seamless enchantment. Navigating the delicate threads of connectivity when adventuring with friends proved to be a sporadic challenge. Although, when the stars aligned, the shared experience of battling foes in vibrant biomes elevated the enjoyment to its best heights. As I ventured deeper into the heart of The Shatter, a persistent ticking clock at the top of the screen added a palpable sense of urgency. When the timer reached its inevitable conclusion, the once-familiar map transformed into a crucible of heightened difficulty, urging a strategic retreat back to the sanctuary of The Tower. This was a mechanic I don’t think I’ve seen before, and it’s implemented really well here, it was a lot cooler than I thought it would be.

Amidst the magic and mayhem, the act of crafting felt like a misstep. The plethora of resources collected across biomes, while crucial for creating diverse weapons and bullets, was hindered by a less-than-intuitive menu system. Crafting, a cornerstone of the game, should ideally be a joyous affair, yet the interface left much to be desired, detracting from the overall crafting experience which is a large portion of playing the game itself. In the grand tapestry of “Wizard With A Gun,” my journey was one of highs and some frustrating hiccups. The allure of crafting my own magical arsenal and unraveling the mysteries of time blended seamlessly with the cooperative chaos of online play. I’m sure the connectivity quirks will get figured out, if they haven’t already, but the cumbersome crafting interface really frustrated my enjoyment, the game’s enchanting world with really cool art style and gameplay variety ultimately cast a spell that kept me captivated for a while, but didn’t leave me with that addiction to want to revisit it right away.
