DOUBLE CROSS Review for Steam

DOUBLE CROSS Review for Steam

Double Cross is a 2D platformer by developer 13AM Games and publisher Graffiti Games. In it, you play as a star agent working for an organization that patrols the multi-verse.

The story of the game revolves around trying to discover the identity of a traitorous double-agent who stole something valuable from the organization to build a weapon. You do this by traveling to 3 different universes to search for clues.  There is a universe covered in goo, one ruled by dinosaurs, and one controlled by robots.

Each of the 3 worlds plays very differently from each other. I liked this as it fit in with the theme of each world being contained in a separate universe. Aside from having different enemies and level design, each world also had a gameplay mechanic that didn’t appear in the other 2.  In the Goo world, there are surfaces covered in different colors of goo that have various effects.  In the Dinosaur world, there are grappling points that act like zip-lines.  In the Robot world, there are balloons to hang on to that allow you to move vertically through the world.

After beating the boss of each world, you gain a clue that specifies who the traitor isn’t. After collecting all 3 clues, you proceed to the game’s final act. While I thought the story of the game was just okay, I will admit that they did a good job of hiding the traitor while simultaneously building up to it. As this game takes place in the multi-verse, one of the game’s characters is an alternate version of the main character who openly hates the organization you work for. While her inclusion might feel like an abuse of the game’s setting, her appearance actually makes a lot of sense by the game’s ending. As for the gameplay, it plays similar to a game series called Megaman. You can run, jump, and wall-jump.

One additional thing that the game adds is a grappling hook. The grappling hook is a tool that your character possesses and can be used throughout the game. The grappling hook can be used to slingshot your character from certain objects as well as to grab physical projectiles out of the air and throw them at any enemy, not just the one who shot the projectile. Additionally, time slows down for a few seconds while you are aiming, something which proved to be a lifesaver as the later levels have entire sections where you have to use a series of grappling hooks to cross a bottomless pit or some type of floor hazard. The 2nd and 3rd levels of the Goo universe are particularly merciless with this.

Overall, I enjoyed playing this game. As such, I think a fair rating for it would be 8/10.
