This wonderful tale is brought to us by ByteRockers’ Games. The Berlin-based company was created in 2008 with a goal of developing games with added value. Their games are not only for entertainment, but installments into pop culture and art forms of cultural heritage. Next to Gelly Break, the company has brought us Purrling and is in development of a VR game titled, We are 4.

GELLY BREAK Review for Nintendo Switch

Ah jelly/slime characters in video games! They are probably my favorites among all characters invented in most video games. They’re amorphous, sometimes see through, maybe good, maybe evil, but over all mostly adorable and unique amongst foes and heroes alike. The Gellies in Gelly Break have made my list of favorite gelatinous forms in video games. It’s weird, but I do have a short roster I always go to when speaking of these types of personalities. These guys are funny, daring, adorable, and easy to love with their funny noises and movements. I always think of Legend of Zelda’s Chu-Chu’s and Dragon Quest’s Slime when approaching monsters of goo-like consistency. It will be nice to add Gellies for a protagonist point of view on my list.

I have to say, I got some old school Rayman vibes from this game. Collecting orbs as you complete objectives along the level is a mechanic that brings back fond memories of the floating character from my childhood. Instead of just one character, you get two slime monster friends to switch between. This co-op jump and run game has the easiest of controls, utilizing most aspects of the Nintendo Switch. It’s fun, easy to play, and easy to come back to when you take a break.

GELLY BREAK Review for Nintendo Switch

There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this game. The colors were vibrant and the choice to make the main characters orange and green was smart. Using darker toned environments, your Gellies really stand out and it is easy to identify platforms and other obstacles that correlate with the Gelly coloring. When your Gellies are stacked on top of one another, the switching functionality not only swaps the characters, but can also be used as an attack and can break glass walls.  I love multi use options because there are so many ways progress in the game. You can play levels different each time and learn new techniques to succeed. The levels and enemies to defeat were fluid, not jerky and abnormal. The jumping and moving platforms worked in tandem with their surroundings. The boss battles are intricate and require critical thinking to overcome. The soundtrack to this game was a relaxing mix of jazz and pop that could calm even the most stressed of players. The only downside of this game is that it is only 6 levels, but there are two separate difficulty levels that you can play through so the replay value is high.
