Heave Ho is one of those quick to play games that no matter how many times you play, you will always be ready to play it again. The first time I personally played Heave Ho was at the reveal event at PAX East 2019 at Devolver Digital’s conference.
Heave Ho is developed by Le Cartel Studio and published by Devolver Digital. The game can be played solo as a single player or can be played co-op with up to 4 players locally. Heave Ho is simple as there is not much skill development or mechanics. It is a pure physics game where the player is portrayed by a huge circular body with two hands, which can hold on to the floors or any other surfaces.
Heave Ho is all about an unpredictable failure that turns out be fun such as when you play through the game you get the best laughs. The overall goal of the game is to obviously get to the end point; But when I say end point, it is not a race but pretty much a bunch of cooperation from the friends who play with you and reach the end location all together, not just one. Each level has a unique twist that lets you go through different terrains with spikes and huge gaps that need to be achieved with only team work.
The characters can be customized by the player’s taste of different colors and costumes and the more you explore, the more fun the gameplay gets. For single players, Heave Ho has some additional time trial quests. But definitely the game is most fun while playing with friends and family to unveil some of the most amazing and funny failures together.
Heave Ho pretty much works with three inputs from controllers – one is the L1, R1 and Left stick, L1 and R1 are for respective hands to grab onto the floor/surface, and left stick is to give the movement towards a specific direction. And that is as simple as that!
Overall, Heave Ho is packed with fun because of the simple gameplay. I would definitely expect some events in the future for keeping the fun active. I would rate this game a solid 9/10.
