Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a game developed by Panache Digital Games and published by Private Division. We have played through games about the evolution of civilizations but has anyone ever thought of what it would be like for Humankind’s evolution as well? Well, yes! Panache Digital Game did exactly that.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is pretty much a simulation of human evolution starting as an ape. The game explores all of the basic discoveries starting with food and shelter. The game starts with an infant who gets lost in the forests of Africa and gives you a real scare about the frightening unknown dangers. You then must find a shelter to hide; once you are done with the quest of finding a shelter, the playable character changes to an ape that is trying to find the infant. It gives you some initial controls and gameplay features of the game.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey pretty much makes the player focus on several basic senses of Humankind: intelligence/seeing, hearing, and smell. Intelligence is a similar skill to detective vision, where you can see the interactive points that are not revealed initially. As you move throughout the forest map, you interact with the items you unlock based on food, tools, water, and materials. As you gain more in-depth knowledge with your skills, the neurons in the brain start growing more. Intelligence can reveal certain things that are visible to the eye. There are similar skills with hearing and smell as well. Hearing reveals any moving dangers that are around the area. As you learn more skill points, your neurons grow, and you can add more neural energy, which reveals additional skills and unlocks.
As you move and unlock more areas of the African forest, you unlock more dangers that can be dangerous to the player as you can enter some random battles with one of the wild animals like a boar and python. I was scared when I first encountered a snake that was almost the size of an anaconda. That did give me serious chills.
Another concept in the game is generations and growth of your clan. Whatever the player discovers, it shares all the information among the clan as well and you can discover newer things. Players can also have the clan mate follow you. There are a lot of additional gameplay features that keep on unlocking.
Overall, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a game about exploration of humankind’s journey from forest to farms. The more you move out of the safe zones in the game, the more dangerous things and gameplay features will be unlocked. I would give this game solid 8.5 stars.
