Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds Review for PC

Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds is an anime style RPG game that takes players into a world based off of the ones seen in Ni No Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn and Wrath of the White Witch. You play as a beta tester for Soul Driver, a virtual reality game which transports you into a world of fantasy and magic. After being thrown into this world amid chaos you become the protector of a magic stone and the fate of this world. It is now your job to uncover the mysteries of this world and hopefully find the answers to your many questions along the way.

When you first start the game you get to choose between five different classes including Rogue, Destroyer, Engineer, Swordsman, and Witch. You get a little cutscene for each of the character’s animations then you can look at the stats and a basic description of each class. Once you pick a character you get to customize it before starting the story, a cutscene then plays where your person gets into one of the pods and is transported into the game where they get greeted by an AI that tells you about the world. After which the AI you are talking to suddenly becomes real and looks surprised, referring to you as “Someone who’s not a part of any world,” before the screen goes black. Honestly this cutscene does well at adding intrigue very early on, it’s something that sticks out to me and draws me into wanting to play the game. This is when the game somewhat begins as you wake up in a medieval kingdom amid the chaos and fire, you are awoken by a small flying creature named Cluu and are told you need to save the Queen. You are then taken through a tutorial where you are taught how to fight and move around. Overall, the movement is smooth but I dislike that you have to click and drag to move the camera around. It takes a while to establish the actual game where you are exploring and meeting people but with the cinematic cutscenes it is still really interesting and does well at keeping the player engaged. After the basic tutorial you have another cutscene with the villain trying to take The Guardian Crystal from the Queen who in a last ditch effort to save it gives it to you telling you to protect it. You then escape with Cluu and begin your journey full of questions and mystery, along the way you meet other players that don’t seem to view the world like you do and largely disregard the NPCs wishes. The beginning of the game does very well at setting up the story in a way that keeps the player engaged. The cutscenes paired with the mystery of what is really going on behind the scenes making you want to play the game to discover it all. This game has a lot of interesting aspects to the story and mechanics but still plays like a normal MMORPG game. Between the familiars, which are animal companions you can get to help you on your journey, and gaining reputation in each area there is a lot to do in between the quests and story.

This game, overall, is a fun experience but there are a few things that could use some polish. While most of the movement is fine, I dislike the fact that in the beginning you can’t explore around as much because of the auto questing, which I couldn’t find a way to turn off, that as well as the auto battling kept tripping me up because even when I did turned it off, it would still start attacking for me. Both those mechanics are common in these types of games especially when they are made for mobile devices, that being said they can get a bit annoying at times. Another thing is the fact that you have to click and drag to move the camera around as well as click and drag in the menus instead of scrolling. Since this is a PC build review I am unsure if they plan to change these things, but for now it is worth mentioning. The only other thing that was a little annoying is the fact that the text bubbles did not always match what the voice actors were saying, usually the voice would only say part of the text and leave it at that while other times the text and the voice just did not match up at all. Those are really the only things that I had trouble with in the game

Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds is an MMORPG game that is available on mobile and PC soon. This game features interesting gameplay and beautiful cinematic cutscenes. It is fun to venture out into this fantasy world and uncover its mysteries and secrets along the way. While this game is fun and has cool mechanics with an intriguing story there are a few things that get in the way in its PC version, such as the auto battling system not turning off and the click and drag of the camera. Either way it will be cool to see what this game has in store for its full PC release today.
