Riftbound League of Legends TCG
Tabletop games held significant popularity alongside video games at PAX East 2025, prompting a hands-on preview of Riftbound from Riot Games. Known for their League of Legends spin-offs, Riot Games is now entering the tabletop arena with Riftbound.
Riftbound is a card game featuring familiar champions from the League of Legends universe. Each champion has a unique ability and is represented by a champion card within their deck. Players also utilize rune cards, which function similarly to action points, and a variety of supporting cards, including additional champions and ability cards that cost runes to play.
A key element of Riftbound is the battlefield. Players compete to control the battlefield each turn, earning one point for holding it. The battlefield also offers special abilities that can be activated upon conquest. The primary goal is to be the first to reach eight points and win.
Supporting cards form the bulk of a player’s deck. Each turn, players receive two runes and one support card. These support cards can be discarded or played by spending runes. Once played, spent support cards can be moved to the battlefield on the following turn. Battles for the battlefield are determined by the total attack points of the cards committed; there is no health mechanic involved. The player with the highest total attack points at the end of each turn claims the battlefield. Players can also spend available runes to utilize their champion cards or their ultimate abilities.
Strategic deck building and efficient rune management are crucial for success and can lead to unexpected comebacks. Riftbound can be played in 1vs1 or 2vs2 matches with multiple battlefields.
Overall, Riftbound offers an enjoyable gameplay experience, with individual games typically lasting between 15 and 45 minutes, though they can sometimes extend longer. Playing Riftbound provides an engaging and entertaining pastime. For the TCG players, Riftbound will definitely be an interesting addition to the League of Legends universe.
