THE GARDENS BETWEEN Review for Xbox One

THE GARDENS BETWEEN Review for Xbox One

A witty game unlike many others, The Gardens Between for Xbox One, by The Voxel Agents, allows players to test their critical thinking to solve riddles and get from one side of the map to the other in order to move from one level to the next while revealing some unique cut-scenes along the way. As players immerse themselves in this micro universe, they’ll be delighted by the retro graphics and tranquil music. The controls are minimalistic and offer little to no autonomy for the player but do grant the player the ability to focus more on solving the puzzle rather than maneuvering around.

The objective of The Gardens Between is simple: reach the end of the stage. Here, you’ll insert an orb into the goal and it’s on to the next level! However, this is easier said than done. To reach the goal and sail their way to the next location, players must call on the aid of their magic lantern. Held by the female character, this lantern will collect glowing orbs which help unlock sealed passages, build pathways, and more! With the help of the male character, players can reveal these glowing orbs and help their female counterparts collect them in their lanterns. When entering a level players should first pay attention to where they can set down their lantern, where they can reveal orbs, and where they can collect orbs. If they focus on these details it will be much easier to complete the overall objective!

THE GARDENS BETWEEN Review for Xbox One

Although at first players are enticed by what seems like an intriguing story, it becomes evident they will not be told much about their characters. While this does not monumentally impact the game, I would have liked to see some explanation behind the concept of The Gardens Between. As players navigate their way through levels, they are provided what appear to be memories from the characters’ lives but by not providing any context it almost makes the game feel stagnant. Leaving the consumer on the edge of their seat is one thing but Voxel Agents seemed to completely deprive players of content. It may not have been necessary to include a story but for context it would have been appreciated. The aesthetic elements were so well-executed I just really wanted to hear more, if you will.

Players should not expect to have complete control in this puzzle game. In fact, the lack of options creates a very minimalist vibe and while these minimalistic controls may at first seem remedial, the simplistic nature allows players to remove themselves from physical gameplay and focus strictly on strategy. This is important because The Gardens Between can get very difficult, very fast. While some levels at first appear easy, they are not as simple as they seem. So, pay attention or you might let some important information pass right by!

For Xbox One players who have been seeking a tranquil, yet challenging puzzle game, The Gardens Between by Voxel Agents might be the right choice. By immersing players in a vivid micro-verse, Voxel Agents create an entirely new concept to puzzle gaming. If players pay attention to patterns, look for hidden clues, and focus on the grand scheme they’re sure to reach the goal!

Score: 8.4
