Tropico 6 by Kalypso Media and developers Limbic Entertainment is a city management game about being a dictator who rules a chain of islands through 4 time eras: colonial, world wars, cold war, and modern. Your 2 main goals are keep the economy good and stay in power. How you choose to do so is up to you.

The city management side of this game is fairly standard. Create buildings to generate money by selling stuff, keep profits above expenses, etc. It’s the other half of the game that sets it apart from other games in the genre.

As you go about being a dictator, you will have an approval rating based on how you play the game. Obviously, a dictator who listens to the concerns of their people will have a higher approval rating than the stereotypical militaristic dictator only out for himself. The approval rating is important mainly because of 2 things which threaten your power: elections and rebels.

Every 10 years after the colonial era, elections will be held to decide the new ruler of the islands. To stay in power, you can take the route of having a high enough approval rating to stay in office. Or, you can be historically accurate and bribe, assassinate, and arrest party leaders. You can even rig the election or (through research) cancel elections altogether. Although many of these actions are not without consequence.

Each citizen that disapproves of you has a chance to turn rebel. This chance is affected by the way you choose to play the game. Rebels usually try to set your buildings on fire and attack any military forces you have built. However, if there are enough rebels, they will try to either kill your character or destroy your palace, both of which would give you an immediate game-over.

As for the 4 time eras, each one of them has different goals required to advance to the next era, and conditions which can cause a game-over if you are not vigilant. For example, the colonial era has a timer that will cause a game-over if the islands have not become independent (either through a large bribe or by declaring war) before the timer runs out.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Tropico 6.
