AVENGING SPIRIT Review for Nintendo Switch

A ghost that can get into a person’s body not knowing they are controlling them to kill and betray other bad guys, makes people wonder why a game like this can be well created and why the old times games are very well done and played. This Japanese tabletop arcade action game, Avenging Spirit, is what people will expect to feel like you are playing these ’80s action games like this.

At the beginning of Avenging Spirit, the game tells the story of a couple who were ambushed by agents. The young woman was about to be kidnapped and taken away from them, and the young man was shot to death afterward. But all of the sudden, the young man turns into a spirit ghost and is summoned by the girlfriend’s father who tasked him to kill hostages to save his daughter from being hostage by the bad guys.

AVENGING SPIRIT Review for Nintendo Switch

When Avenging Spirit began, I picked the guy with the cover face wearing a pajama suit. The game placed me into a construction site where I moved around fighting with ninjas, gangsters, Wonder Woman impersonators, and others to find the three keys. But when my character died, I didn’t know what to do because the spiritual ghost can’t fight. When I lost all of my energy the game let me have 10 seconds to continue. I never knew that I can control one of the bad guys to make them fight, too, when I started playing this game. When I figured that out, it made sense through every stage when one of my fighters died. When the boss level came up, I was either easily winning or easily dying and continuing with the last fighter I had. In the end, even if you defeated all the enemies but don’t have the keys, the ghost spirit will lose its energy with a sad ending not rescuing her. But if you succeed, the Ghost spirit will reunite with his girlfriend safe and sound but only to say goodbye and hopes to see her in the afterlife.

Avenging Spirit is a unique story told in this game, where the goal is to control as many bad guys making them fight other bad guys as well, and to rescue his girlfriend. I like the character design of the bad guys that looked like this is in the 80s. Plus the music tells a lot about arcade games back in the day.

I kind of find this game a bit odd when you die multiple times you can have as many chances as you can without starting over to reach the boss level. And that, at the end of the game, if you don’t find the keys even if you try hard to defeat every boss level from stages 1-6, the spirit ghost was unable to rescue her girlfriend, which is kind of frustrating.

Overall, this is a really fun action game. I had a good time challenging myself from easy mode to hard mode on how I can find the keys and defeat and control as many bad guys as I can. I would recommend Avenging Spirit to anyone that has never heard of this game and loves the old 80s tabletop arcade games to check this out.

7/10
