MO: Astray Review for Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch is particularly popular of the style of games that are best suited for the handheld consoles and I think MO: Astray is one of those games, developed by Archpray, Inc., and published by Rayark. MO: Astray is a platformer game where the player assumes the role of a slime looking organism.

MO: Astray is 2D platformer with an amazing art style and the graphics quality looks crisp and clear. The game starts off with a dream-like sequence where the player starts off as a slime and simply moves to different tree/crack-like structure where it receives the energy, and then learns to jump as a slime. As the player moves on through the level, which is a mix of timing sequences and puzzle solving, the slime learns skills, including possessing the zombie-like creatures, which were living beings before, and can access their memories.

Possessing the creatures will help in moving from one platform to another, which activate the buttons. Sometimes the player will have to be smart enough to make the creatures move to certain locations to unlock moving platforms.

One of the cool features of our slime is that it can stick on the walls and can jump from one wall to another as it cannot slide on the wall. The player will have to use precise timing and quick wits to clear out the levels by utilizing all the skills. Over time, the slime will learn skills such as dash, and mid-air jumps that need to be quick or timed well enough to complete the level.

Throughout the game, we learn the dark truth about the things that happened to the world, like the infection, and what is the reason of existence of our slimy friend. MO: Astray is also not shy to leave out the gory details of creatures exploding or shattering in pieces when we make them move to traps or obstacles. The game is simply not just a puzzle platformer, but also where the boss battle exists and even though we do not have much of an attack, we utilize all of our skills to kill the boss using the surrounding and boss’s skills itself.

One of the things about MO: Astray is that even though each level is quite lengthy, it kind of feels exhausting over time. But overall, MO: Astray is one of a kind game that does not give a feel of any other platformer, but shines as its own creation. I would rate MO: Astray 8.5 stars.
