Super Sami Roll Review for Nintendo Switch

The game, Super Sami Roll, by developer Sonzai Games and publisher X Plus, released for the Nintendo Switch on November 4th, 2021. This game is a simple platformer. The player must get from point A to point B in a 3D environment by jumping and running (or in this case, rolling) to the end. I enjoy platformers, so I had fun playing this game. My main issue was that playing Super Sami Roll normally seemed very simple, but because of that, I found myself trying to find ways, using the game’s mechanics, to constantly get a better time for each level, which was very fun. I will explain what I mean when talking about the gameplay.

Gameplay

The gameplay for Super Sami Roll is executed very simply for a platformer. Players have their standard jumping mechanics (including bouncing) and a unique mechanic that lets the player attach themselves to a wall or platform. The player must use these mechanics to reach the goal as fast as they can. For me, this is very easy to do normally. However, while I was messing around in the game, I started to find ways to reach the goal faster than if I just played the level normally. For example, instead of using the platforms provided to get from point A to point B, I used the bounce mechanic to get there faster. Another neat trick I found was to use the bounce mechanic where there is an angle on the platform. Doing so will give you extra speed. Now considering the goal of each level is to beat it as fast as possible, I can see this game being a good pick for a player trying their hand at speedrunning. By using the game’s mechanics to the player’s advantage, they can come up with new ways to reach the goal faster and beat the game faster. Of course, there is also the game’s level design.

Level Design

The level design of the game is both very simple and very interesting. Each level consists of simple block placements, along with enemies and moving platforms. Of course, this is very simple for level design. That is how it is when playing the game normally. Once I started trying to speedrun each level, that is when the fun began. The level’s entities (blocks, platforms, walls, etc.) can be used, along with the game’s mechanics, to get faster times. This can be done by using the shapes of the level’s entities. One example of this is by using the standard ground block to gain more speed. At the edge of the block, there is a slant. By using the bounce mechanic on this slant, the player will gain speed from bouncing off the slant. This is only one example. Of course, there are many other ways to use the level’s entities to your advantage.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Super Sami Roll is a simple platformer game that is easy to play. For experts of platformers, this can be considered boring. However, it is not until you try speedrunning the game that the true fun begins. I truly believe that this game is a good start for new players who want to get experience with the basics of speedrunning. If you fit this description, then I would recommend this game.
