Treachery in Beatdown City Review for Nintendo Switch

When I first started playing the beat-em up NES games, one of the iconic games that comes to mind was the Double Dragon series. Recently, publisher NuChallenger LLC and developer HurakanWorks released Treachery in Beatdown City for Steam and Nintendo Switch. We reviewed the game on Nintendo Switch.

Treachery in Beatdown City Review for Nintendo Switch

Treachery in Beatdown City gives you a similar art style and feel of Double Dragon. The player starts off with a linear map like in Super Mario Bros 2, moving from one level to another – encountering mobs in some of them. The fights are a mix of beat-em-up and Final Fantasy-like gameplay. There are fight points that players accumulate over time that can be used to fire off some special mechanics or one can say abilities. There is a concept of revenge matches and attacks that could be performed as well. There are also Actions that a player can take just like in Final Fantasy, where during a fight, the player builds up action and can use the FP and attack with strikes and grapples.

There are three different characters and different skills and abilities as well that players can acquire over the story. The story contains the president getting kidnapped and the player and group of fighters have to go through all the street filled with big bad guys to get the president released. The players have to go through different strategies to defeat the bosses just like any other RPG-like game where different bosses perform different attacks.

Treachery in Beatdown City Review for Nintendo Switch

Treachery in Beatdown City has some great music that has been brought back from the 90’s era and the 8-bit pixelated graphics that bring back the feel of some amazing times of gaming history. The game does lose its concept as the action gets kind of repetitive and takes a toll on the player, but does provide a great mix of some historic gameplay in this modern generation.

Overall, Treachery in Beatdown City might attract a lot of players from 90’s era who have experienced and gone through the phase of 8-bit beat-em up games. The game does require some improvements to not make it so repetitive, but brings in a great RPG-ish concept in a totally different brawl and beat-em-up games. I would give Treachery in Beatdown City 6/10 stars.
