PAX East 2019: Devolver Digital Impressions

Katana ZERO:

Katana ZERO is an action-platformer with some hack and slash, which is developed by Askiisoft and published by Devolver Digital. With the hands-on demo of about 3 levels, we had a pretty good idea what Katana ZERO is all about. The game looks simple, but the small and simple mechanics are pretty crucial for the game in order to survive. It just doesn’t have simple kills and it also has deflect moves and stealth mechanics.

Katana ZERO is a story of an assassin and you start out by going on a killing rampage and leaving no traces behind. As we move on through the story, little details or back story fills in the gap about the life of the assassin. Also, Katana ZERO has dialogue selection mechanics. We didn’t notice much difference on how they affect the game just in 10 minutes of gameplay but looking at the implementation in the long run, it does seems to have an effect. Katana ZERO was pretty popular and had a huge crowd of attendees trying to get their hands-on to play.

Katana ZERO is set to launch for PC and Nintendo Switch on April 18, 2019.

Heave-Ho:

Heave-Ho just got announced during PAX East 2019, and it is no doubt one of the most popular and fun games that we had tried during our PAX East visit. Heave-Ho is developed by Le Cartel Studios and published by Devolver Digital.

Heave-Ho is an extremely fun, physics-based local co-op game. The game can be played solo, but personally I prefer co-op. With additional people together, even with strangers, you can be friends just like that. The target of the game is to reach towards the end goal. Each player selects a character that only has a head and two hands, and the controls are pretty simple; with two hands, you can grab and move around. Players can hold on to the surfaces or hold each other’s hand in order to move around the level by either hanging and using the physics to get to the line. There are coins that can be collected in level as well. In addition, there are funny things happening and players can get squashed if they fall or hit a spike wall. But no worries, as players respawn in just a couple of seconds. The overall experience is definitely going to bring a lot of people together by just either playing or just watching the game.

Heave Ho is set to release for PC and Steam this Summer.
