Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince Review for PS4

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince Review for PS4

Developer Frozenbyte and publisher Modus Games are back with one of their most popular series – Trine –  with Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. We had already written an impression about the preview of Trine 4 for Steam last month. The game added Co-Op mode this time that can be played either locally or over the internet.

Frozenbyte has brought back the 2.5D side scrolling feature back as the previous game in the series (Trine 3 was a full 3D game). The heroes of Trine return with some amazing new 2D landscape and puzzles. Three heroes, wizard Amadeus, knight Pontius, and thief Zoya reunite to embark on a new journey to save the Prince Sellus.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince Review for PS4

Prince Sellus is having issues with his nightmares that are turning into reality and affecting the whole world because the beasts are roaming free in the world and are endangering the peace. It is up to our heroes who must save the world and stop the prince from causing the chaos. Initial game starts off with three levels introducing the power of each Heroe.

Amadeus can conjure and levitate items, Pontius can use sword and shield, and shield can reflect the lights and water and also can reflect the attack. And finally, Zoya can use arrows and ropes. To go through the levels you will need to keep switching between three heroes to move through the levels. And as you move to the higher levels the difficulty increases. There are different ways to go through the levels.

Each character has some initial skills that they come with and as you move up and defeat the enemies you get stars that unlock more skills. You can unlock the basic skills automatically but there are secondary skills that can be unlocked such as Amadeus’s levitation stomp or Pontius’ lightning sword. There are some great amount of abilities added in this game as the progression of characters. I love Pontius’s Dream Shield, which can be used as an addition to your own shield that leaves an impression of shield in mid air.

Puzzles are amazing in this game, though some parts do feel repetitive but most of them keeps a player puzzled for a while. There are some amazing levels that light the dream sequence and a dark area with electric water that was tough to deal with because your crates start getting electrifying as well. The developers have created a very beautiful world with some great art that is either colorful and bright or it’s straight up a dark world.

Overall, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince played a great role in bringing back a great game series, with its roots in 2.5D. I would rate the game a solid 9 stars.
